Coatimundi

- Part of raccoon family.

- Average length is  13 to 27 inches. They stand about 12” tall, and weigh between 4 and 17 pounds.

- Their distinct features include a slim head, with a long nose, small ears, dark feet, and a long tail.

- Their fur is usually light brown or black, with a lighter colored belly, and a tail with white rings.

- Eat an omnivorous diet.

- Breeding season depends on a lot on their environment, and will begin at the start of the rainy season. The gestation period is about 11 weeks. Females will give birth to 3 to 7 babies.

- Since their ankles rotate at 180 degrees, the coatimundi can climb down trees head first.

     - Average lifespan is 7 to 8 years.

Mexican Spotted Owl

- Spotted owls are typically around 17” in length. Their wingspan is 45” on average. They typically weigh between 1 and 2 pounds.

- These owls do not breed every year. Breeding season is February to March. They usually lay 2 eggs, but can lay up to 4. The eggs are 2” long and are white and smooth. Chicks reach independence at 3 to 4 months old, and reach sexual maturity at 1 year old.

- Since they are nocturnal, they typically do most of their hunting at night

- Average lifespan is 16 to 17 years. The survival rate for juveniles is only 21 to 29%.

White Tail Deer

- Average head to tail size is 3 to 7’, their tail adds another 4 to 14 inches. Males typically weigh around 100 pounds, females between 85 and95 pounds.

- Their fur is red-ish brown in the spring and summer, and then turns grey-ish brown in winter. The underside of their tail is white.

- Deer have dichromatic vision with blue and yellow primaries. This means they cannot see oranges or reds as well as the human eye.

- Males develop antlers each year. Antlers begin to grow in the spring, and are covered in “velvet”, a tissue that supplies blood to the growing bones.

- Breeding season is between late October and early November. Gestation period is 175 to 185 days. Litters are typically 1 to 3 fawns.

- Eats an herbivorous diet.

- Average lifespan is 4 to 5 years.

Wild Turkey

- Males are typically 39 to 49” in length, females 30 to 37”. Males typically weigh between 11 and 24 pounds, females between 6 and 12 pounds. Their wingspan ranges from 4 to 5 feet.

- Wild turkeys can fly short distances. They will usually fly close to the ground, for no more than ¼ mile.

- Breeding season is triggered by longer days in the spring, along with warm weather. This usually occurs in late February or early March.

- Females will lay 10 to 12 eggs in a 2 week period. They will incubate these eggs continuously, turning the eggs once an hour, for 26 to 28 days.

- Eats an omnivorous diet.

- Average lifespan is 3 to 5 years.

Brown Bear

The chances of you seeing a brown bear are slim to none. Brown bears haven’t been spotted in Arizona for years! Some fun facts on them though…

- Average neck to tail size is 4 ½’ to 9’. Their head adds another 10 to 16”. Males typically weigh around 400 pounds, females around 300 pounds.

- Their fur is very thick, and can reach a length of 4 to 5”. Color ranges from dark brown, to almost cream. Most have a long mane at the back of the neck.

- Eats an omnivorous diet.

- Breeding season ranges from mid-May to early July. The gestation period is 180 to 270 days. Males do not assist in caring for cubs, who stay with their mother for about 2.5 years. Females go into heat every 3 to 4 years. While in heat, females will often mate with multiple males, and cubs will be fathered by different males.

- Average lifespan is 20 to 30 years.

Black Bear

- Average neck to tail size is 4’   to 6.5’. Their head adds another 10 to 13”. Males typically weigh between 190 and 260 pounds, females between 130 and 170 pounds.

- Their fur can vary in color…may be black, brown or a cinnamon color.

- Eats an omnivorous diet.

- Breeding season ranges from June to July. The gestation period is 7 to 8 months. Litter size is between 1 and 6 cubs, who will stay with their mother for about a year and a half.

- Hibernate for 3 to 8 months, depending on climate.

- Average lifespan is 17 to 20 years.

Mountain Lion

- Average neck to tail tip size for makes is 8’, females 6 ½’, with tails between 25 and 37”. Males typically weigh between 120 and 220 pounds, females between 65 and 140 pounds.

- Their fur is short, and typically light brown in color.

- Eats a carnivorous diet.

- Breeding season can happen at any time of the year, but is frequently from December to March. The gestation period is 85 to 95 days. Average litter size is between 1 and 6 cubs, with a survival rate of 1 cub per litter. These cubs stay with their mother for about 2 years.

- Average lifespan is 8 to 13 years
